Default 4 banger Vertex magneto

Friend found this Vertex magneto for a 4 cyl engine but has no clue to what it fit. Tang drive sorta looks like a Volkswagon but couldnt find anything to compare it to. My plan was to change the post over and run it on a 172 Ford .

The clamp on secondary section of the post is marked Volvo. Maybe like a B18?

Vertex was common on industrial beetle engines over here.
I have one nos that came with a surplus engine that went into a car.

Make sure the rotation is correct for the mag and the engine its going in to. Also not all mags have any advance built in them. You will need to remove the lower drive to determine if it has any advance in it....

It certainly looks like the drive tabs for a VW. Not sure what the adaptor is for.

Google image gets a confused medley of pictures of B18 distributors, but I think those tangs are right for that application.

I think, not sure though, the VW ignition rotates opposite to four cylinder A/B.

172 is not a A/B. The mag guy we use said he can change the rotation if needed. Pretty sure now it is for a Volvo.

Is the 172 a tractor/industrial engine?

Yes. But far from stock. Its based on a 172 motor. 39 ford trans and it has smoked a number of flathead powered cars

Wow! Very impressive. Glass bowl Holleys even! Care to share any specs on it? Is it a TROG car?

When the body is back together I'll share some pictures. Starting a second one. Its a 29 roadster with a hopped up 192 and a 39 ford trans and rear. The bellhousing is the hardest piece of the puzzle to find.
