Default Pop-up Adds at Bottom of Screen

Today when I logged into the Barn, I'm getting pop up add at the bottom of my screen. This happens when using either Google or Firefox as my browser.

Understand Ryan can't provide this for free forever, but are others here experiencing the same?

Yup! It's happening right now as I type this. Nothing is free.
Hope we don't start seeing political adds.

Just a guess but methinks that's probably part of the "website update" from a few days ago...
Like the rest of you, I really disdain this poopy. Still, Ryan needs to earn a living just like the rest of us.

Install an ad blocker extension in your respective browsers. There are a variety of ones that work well.

There is a banner at the bottom of my screen, so yes! You can close it, but it doesn't take long before it is back.

Quite frankly, I'd rather have a $50 annual "Alliance Member" option than these annoying ads.

I wonder if that isn't coming? All I know is that "The Ford Barn" is no longer the first place I will go in the morning.

I agree with everyone else. They are very annoying! They would be much easier to put up with if, they didn't "flash" like they do.

Hi Everyone. Quite a while ago I added the free AddBlock Plus https://adblockplus.org/ to my browser of choice, Edge and get no pop-up adverts on this site.

That sounds good. I did, however, just now read the terms of use, which does not warranty it's security. I'm already paranoid about security breaches, so I'll hold off on installing it for a bit. Thanks for posting, Jeff!

The ones I have used in the past create issues. A lot of sites will block you unless you remove the Ad blocker, LOL.

My experience here is that if you stay logged in, no ads appear (ever) in the forum and swap meet sections without any additional ad blocker. If you start on the home page there will be ads on that page.

David, this is something new that just started today, not sure why it is on some peoples page and not others. It is the bar at the bottom on the screen.

Well.........no expert here, but over on the right hand side of the ad is a X in a circle.
I clicked on that--- ads gone and they have not returned.

They will probably return when I disconnect and come back --- but they are still gone as I continue to type this.

Update: They did return after I hit submit for this discussion, but click the X and they are gone again.

I am still using Windows XP (don't tell Ryan), and when I click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the ad...it goes away and stays gone until I go to the next page or post.

The Ford Barn costs me money every month. It is not profitable. So, I am doing some different things with advertising in an effort to try to improve that situation. However, if you are logged in you shouldn't be effected by any of these changes.

There might be a time when I had to have some ads for logged in users, but I'm not willing to go there yet.

Yes, these pop-ups appeared recently out of the blue, and I am still getting them. I hit the X on the right, and that deletes them for a time, but then they reappear shortly after again. They are a distraction. Thanks Ryan for working on a solution to eliminate them. Regards Mercman <><

So, those of us who were in business know that losing money each month isn't a plan to keep the Ford Barn going on as we hope it will. Guessing if it were to fold, most, if not all, of us who are here everyday, will suffer a great loss in the pursuit of keeping our beloved Fords on the road.

You must have some ideas as to how you can continue to keep the site going, and at the very least cut your losses??

As you've come to know over your years here as "the Boss"....there are some very intelligent loyal members. Maybe you could tap into some creative thinking that could erase your deficits?? We do have some skin in this game.

Just a thought....Dick.

I don’t really care about making money... it would be nice, but it’s not a driver. The Ford Barn is never gonna make me rich, so I don’t worry about it too much.

I really just want to stop some of the bleeding, so I am trying some things on the advertising side. These changes, however, will not effect you if you are logged in.

If things got really bad, I’d consider adding ads to the site while logged in, but only if it was minimally invasive.

I don't mind ads, especially if it helps keep the Barn afloat, but that bottom bar was very distracting.

Maybe the solution is to charge all Barners a yearly stipend like $20 dollars.

Never saw that at the bottom that others have mentioned.
Lately when I first bring up the website I get an ad. Usually a ford truck dealer.
After I Cross it out I never see another ad.

I have to admit that the ads don't bother me that much if it keep this site up and running. Vintagemustang.com forum used them to support the site and I would click on them every now and then to help keep the site up and going.

Ryan.....this site has educated me to no end....whatever it takes to keep it going....if it’s a little ad at the bottom of the page, I’ll deal with it.

Now....is this a good time to bring up the T-shirt thing again?!?!?!..........Mark

As the great majority of members never post, an annual fee would drive them away. Perhaps those members who find membership profitable might contribute a token fee.
The $20 mentioned earlier might be a little high, so maybe $10 ? I don't sell, but I find it profitable in knowledge gained!

I appreciate it y'all... Sincerely, I do... I *think* I got this though... I should be able to clear enough ad revenue on logged off users to make this place float. And like I said, if that doesn't work I can always do some less aggressive ads for logged on users. I'm not all that worried about it at the moment.

This sticky footer ad was only meant to be viewable by those logged off. I screwed something up in implementation and it displayed to users that were logged on... That's all.

The only thing that bothered me were the long-time users that responded with, "I am gone until that ad is removed!" Seems like the appropriate response would be something more along the lines of, "Hey, that ad is annoying... Think we could do something else?"

I don't mind at all when someone disagrees with me... But it bothers me when someone is straight up disrespectful over a service that I provide them for absolutely nothing in return. I mean, I have an ego...

There is a 2" sidebar on each side of the forum(at least on my computer) and ads in the sidebar would not be as bothersome as they are at the top or bottom. Can't speak for others, but ads in the sidebar are more easily ignored.

I like the fact that the $20 may drive away a number of folks. Similar to a door cover charge at nice establishments... that cover charge is meant to discourage certain elements.
Still, $10 may be easier on younger folks... either way, I'm, more than willing to pay whatever Ryan may deem fair.

I guess I'm in the minority but, if the pop up adds provide $$$ to keep this site afloat, I think the annoyance factor is worth it. I'd rather have the adds, than an annual fee.

I very much appreciate how you think and what motivates you.

It's a truly great site and I access it, all most every day.

If you haven't already, get an Alliance membership on the H.A.M.B. I think it all ends up in the same pot and won't involve any extra effort on anyone's part.

I know I had a looming sense of guilt for partaking of all this free stuff until I became an Alliance member. Plus, you get the neat plaque.

How about some merch like the HAMB? I remember Shelly did two things:
1) Fordbarn T's
2) Auctions on donated items. Profit went to her (or you in this case).

Just a thought...

The Ford Barn has become an integral part of my daily routine. I feel a sense of brotherhood here, and I'm on the site several times a day. There are friends here. That all has significant value to me in my life. The banner adds are a very small price to pay to get all the benefits the site freely gives to us through Ryan's generosity. If he wants or needs the adds to support the site, or even if he wants to make a few bucks, which he doesn't, it is OK with me. Ryan, I greatly value the site, and thank you for it.
