Steve
Around 1962 I had a 30 coupe with a 59AB engine, ran really well and strong.
My wife even drove it.

I set mine @ .015, don't know about the dwell, no end play on mine, timing
was set @ 4 degrees BTDC. Hope this helps.

Do you mean you'd like to run one set of points instead of two? If so, I can't help you, if not, read on.

I believe I have that same Mallory in my '51 (I'd have to check the exact numbers). When I set my points using the gap, the car didn't run very well. I ended up buying a used dwell meter and set the dwell to the Mallory specs (I think it was 36 degrees total; again I'll have to check) and it ran a lot better. You set each set of points individually by blocking the other set open and then check total and work from there; it took a bunch of fiddlin' IIRC. On a modified engine, I set the idle advance using a vacuum gauge. with the vacuum line (if any) plugged, I adjust the idle to give the highest vacuum and then retard it just a little bit. Then using an advance timing light, I check for total advance at speed. If it's in the low 20's, you're probably good. If not you're going to have to play with weights, etc. to get it right.

If this is the Mallory distributor i'm thinking of, there is a stepped plastic "key" that you insert into a slot in the breaker plate to set total advance, either to 22 degrees or 36 degrees. For a flathead the former is best.

I will try to dig out the instruction sheet for that distributor the next time I'm at my shop.

Running both sets of breakers will give better dwell time. This give the coil better field saturation. Running only one defeats that purpose.

will not run well with only a single set of points ( not enough dwell)
