Default 289 V8 oil pan removal

Has anyone been able to remove a 289 oil pan without having to raise the engine. Based on directions in the shop manual it can be done. The 64 Galaxie cross member goes directly under the pan. There is clearance but it's the oil pump/pickup.
The manual says after removing the pan bolt crank the engine as required to obtain clearance and remove the pan.

What that is telling you is you may have to turn the crank manually for the crank throws to clear the pan rail.
