Default Noise in neutral

My 28 Phaeton has a clicking noise when I slip it into neutral when slowing down. The clicking noise is directly proportionate to the speed of the car. If I let the car slow down in gear, there is no noise.

pilot bearing maybe but why slow down in neutral? Usually one slows down down in whatever gear you were in to begin with to get some engine braking
