Default Valve adjusting marks ????

I picked up this rebuilt 21 stud LB a while back and pulled the intake. On the casting near each lifter there are three yellow grease pen marks.I'm guessing that they have something to do with valve adjustment.Does anyone care to venture a guess as to their purpose? It was rebuilt 50+ years ago and never installed so asking the rebuilder is pretty much out of the question.
Thanks, Gene

Too bad you don't have one with four yellow grease pen marks, it is more rare and very sought after.

It's as simple as, whoever checked and adjusted the valves did it three times and marked each one done as a reminder of which one was done.
The four marked ones were done using more caution.
