I am not going to get into an argument about using or not using anti-freeze. But I have used Prestone anti-freeze almost exclusively for over fifty years on two continents in many different vehicles. Never have I experienced any bad effects such as foaming.

I have no connections to whatever company produces Prestone anti-freeze other than as a satisfied customer.

I had a similar concern and before you try a bunch of stuff... Go to NAPA buy the combustion gas kit. It works great easy to do and you will know if combustion gases are entering your cooling system through the head gasket.

I loan mine out to club members.

Ours used to foam, and loose coolant, when climbing hills.

After getting the radiator rodded out, refilling with the same coolant, no more issues.

The previous owner, using water only, hasn't done any favours to anything in the cooling system. The rust will have coated the inside of everything - it insulates the coolant from both the engine and the outside air, meaning the engine ends up hotter than it should, then when the coolant does manage to whisk some of the heat away, it can't dump it through the radiator.
