Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Judging standards is silent on the use of a lock washer with the pedal pad, but I notice the Standard Hardware Book lists a lock washer to be used with the accelerator pedal pad. Was this washer A-22217 (page 15 under spark and throttle controls) used throughout production?
Thanks for your help - Hunter |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
After reading your question, I also looked it up. It is interesting, of the
ones I've seen or have, none have a lock washer( which means nothing ). Up too the top, for another look. Lets hope somebody knows the answer. |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
The lock washer was only used in 1928 on the accelerator pedal and the starter pedal - tough item to find if you need them.

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Doug,
Could you expand on the washer thing? I don't quite see how a washer would be used on the starter pedal unless it is the earlier offset starter type which I don't know much about. If you know the date the washer was eliminated, would you post it here? I have a Sept 28 roadster and a Late Nov special coupe. I hope they didn't have the washers. Rusty Nelson |

Sure makes sense on the starter rod...it does have a gap when the "button" is screwed down on the rod. |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
1-1-28 Parts Price List shows 5/16 (1/16 x 37/64) (R.F.)
Would it be safe to assume the 5/16 is center hole; 1/16 thickness; 37/64 OD; “RF” raven finish? |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Charles,
That's the way I took it...the threads measure .312" (5/16"). |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Rusty -
I believe the washers were eliminated when the starter switch was changed from the early square style to the more rounded type in October/November 1928. The original washers I have seen were peculiar in the small outside diameter which is very close to the same diamter as the raised boss on the starter pedal and the underside of the accelerator pedal. Also, they had a noticible knurl on the outside edge, although there is no guarantee they were all made with the same knurl. |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Doug,
Do you know if they were split washers on the throttle stud? Rusty |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
The Hardware book uses the word " lock " in the description.

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
I've found the same thing as what Doug said, the washers were dropped when the switch shape changed.

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Doug,
Rusty and I have an issue with the size of this lock washer. Is the PPL size for that lock washer correct or is it a typo? "37/64" (.578") is very large! |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Okay, good question. I will see if I can find one quickly to measure. I suspect the correct outside diamter is 33/64" as the ones I have seen are just about the same O.D. as the raised boss on the 1928 starter pushrods.

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Well, I spent a little time sifting through a box of lock washers. Found one with a 33/64" O.D. but that is too large when placed on the accelerator assy. I decided to follow up on a tip from Tom Moniz to use the washer for the steering column clamp to gas tank bolt. That one is a little smaller on the O.D. (7/16"), but close to the one on the accelerator/starter pedal. Somewhere, I have one on the starter pushrod, but there are too many boxes to find it quickly. Maybe, someone can measure the washer on an original car?
I did find a good way to sort through lock washers was to use a slightly rusty (no grease) left side engine splash pan! Made it really easy to pour them back into the box when I was done. |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
Interesting thread.
For the record that book does contain errors. I've got in the habit to pencil in notes beside stuff if I'm positive it ain't correct. |

Re: Accelerator Pedal Pad Lock Washer
I looked last night for my early pedal, but couldn't find it. While looking I did manage to break my spare original headlamp lens though.
Both my 1928 and 1931 Parts Price List show the same size, and the 1931 book lists 3 of the part number with a different suffix. |
