Default Birth of the Road Trip - 100 years of the Lincoln Highway

This is a fantastic documentary about the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in the United States. Of course, starring old Fords.

What have you been up to Henry? You have been very quiet of late. Is the winter weather slowing you down? We all enjoy your road trips. Cheers Tony.

The volume of my work has taken a dramatic upswing and distracted me from many of my fun passions. I still drive Old Henry every day and am hoping to find time for another road trip soon. In the meantime, I'm pursuing another hobby -

Just a stock picture. I'm waiting for my birthday this month for mine.

I've got this trip across the plains all mapped out. (Interactive map: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Orem...8979!3e0?hl=en)

It will parallel or ride upon some of the old Lincoln highway in some sections.

I just need 5 days to do it in and haven't got that many comin up probably until spring.

I'm afraid an 8½' (2.6M) wingspan won't fit in Old Henry. It'll have to stay home. It'll just be me and little Lady again.

I do have a close friend and neighbor with a very nice camera drone that can follow "Big Al"* (the plane) in the sky for some dramatic footage. Can't wait.

*Short for Albatross. The profile from the ground has the exact dimensions and appearance of a small (yes small, some go up to 12', ave. 10') albatross.

I haul my 12'4" Sailaire in a little Saturn SW and did haul it to a antique car and plane meet in my 35 ford tudor. Just have to give up center of car to the long wing halves. It looks like you have a electric motor, I use a latex tube to launch my Sailaire, I love to get in with some turkey vultures and sail for a long time with them finding the thermals to keep us up. The plane, Ford and me are getting a little old to do much sailing any more.

Wow! 12' 4" is big. I just watched a couple of videos of the Sailaire. Those led me to this one of a 51' RC glider. The biggest in the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG9LzT60RLM

Enjoy.

Here's onboard video of wedge-tails attacking the smaller version of my plane.

Fortunately, the plane survived.
Don't have those nasty critters where I fly . . . I hope.

Hi Old Henry, This photo from 1940 on SHORPY reminds me of your trips in the desert looking out at the mountains.

Thank you, J

I travel along Lincoln Highway/ Rt.30 frequently here in Lancaster PA. It's very heavily traveled and pretty scary these days between here and Phila PA.

I travel between Columbus, Ohio, and Chicago on a regular basis. US 30 (old) was the Lincoln Highway. Bits and pieces are still there.

Reminds me of traveling between Chicago and Terre Haute on US41.

Except US41 was 2-lane and US30 is now 4-lane.

And the stop ( I forget the name of the place) at Kentland, Indiana, has been torn down and replaced with . . . .stuff.

Lincoln Highway trivia - The US military and commercial truck manufacturers have used a portion of old Rt 30 near Jennerstown PA for brake testing for years, and still do. See page 13 on this pdf - http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a489156.pdf
