Nice article showing our plain lifters and tools.

TIG welding the oil gear on is definitely NOT recommended. A #4 pin is all that is needed.

Here is a pic of the light weight version of the lifters.

I fully agree that welding the gear is a terrible idea. Further, the 404A is not a high RPM performer especially when compared to the Moon (Potvin) 425. The 404A would be a great street cam if not for the wear and fragility issues.

The "fragility" issues are solved by using a 32 steel core. It is noticably stiffer looking at it with the strobe at high rpm.
In comparison testing of cast iron to steel, in a couple of engines, one fairly recently, wear seems to be about the same.
I ran a 404 in a 315 ci street engine for 7000 miles once. One drag race event and several autocross events along the way. There was slight wear on the cam and lifters but minimal refacing of both kept them going.

Curious about the advice to not TIG the gear on and only pin it.

Welding on cast iron will create hard spots and require grinding to remove the gear next time. It will also screw up the heat treat in the gear and possibly reduce the press on the gear.
A pin or set screw is like an axle key on an early Ford rear end, you dont need it but it is cheap insurance.
