Default 50 & 51 Heater Control Valves

I am seeing some conflicting information on the heater control valves for 50 and 51 Ford cars. Can these be interchanged or must they be used specifically for the car intended. I see differences between the two (spring located on the back on the 51 unit, spring on the side on 50 unit)?
