Front Wheel Cylinders

I have found significant pitting in my 1939-41 front wheel cylinders (1"" / 1.25"). These are evidently no longer available from the vendors, who suggest changing to the 1942-48 wheel cylinders (1" / 1.375"). Any thoughts regarding this change regarding pedal effort, braking efficiency, etc. ? Thanks much!

Might be a good time to convert to the Bendix style (Lincoln) brakes. Complete bolt-on kits are available.

Later wheel cylinders work; been using them for replacements for quite a while.

Note that the Chinese seem to have a problem getting the holes drilled right, been milling the slot deeper in the big piston to let the cup sit out farther and clear the misplaced hole.

Thanks for the heads-up on cylinders from China. As I recall, Chairman Mao's Great Leap Forward did not come with a braking system.

Is there an alternative source to the product from China?

Try Rock Auto. Look for 1946 Ford. Also your local NAPA may be able to get you these parts which are not made in China.

The current pictures of the Raybestos wheel cylinders on RockAuto web sight show "Made in USA on the casting; going to have to order a pair next time and see for sure. And if they are, check and see if the machining is correct.

On my 47, I found that someone had previously installed new, earlier 1-1/4 cylinders. I changed back to 1-3/8 on my 47. So, I have 'near-new' 1-1/4 cylinders, which I will offer free. Of course, if you were seeking my advise, I would suggest using new, 1-3/8 cylinders for your application. Improved braking, meaning less pedal force needed. (Ford thought this up, not me.)
