Default Overdrive solenoid leaking

I've got a '50 merc overdrive, the solenoid always drips where it meets the transmission. The solenoid is NOS, I've tried adding a paper gasket between the flange but that didn't really do anything. I also tried adding an o ring between the solenoid and the transmission, but that just made it stick in overdrive sometimes, I guess it's binding on the shaft so it won't release. Also it looks like it's still dripping. Any way to seal this thing up for good?

There is a little oil seal in the tranny where the solenoid shaft goes into the case.s

Is it replaceable without pulling the transmission apart?

No tranny work...merely pull the solenoid to replace the seal.

I have a National 240698, it looks like the seal that would go in the solenoid. It doesn't fit the transmission that's for sure. Unless my old seal is stuck in there, but it didn't look like it.

The pawl is in an area that generally doesn't have much oil flow but it will get some cast off in there. The seal just keeps the oil from getting into the operating solenoid case. If the oil level in the tail housing is a bit high then it might leak more there. Mine will seep there but not a dripping leak per se.

So I pulled the solenoid out the other night, fluid pours out of the transmission making it difficult to see, but I felt in the transmission with a pic and sure enough I felt a lip. I stuck my seal puller in there and it popped right out. It was probably original, it was steel faced and the rubber was almost gone so just looking at the transmission without the solenoid in there and it didn't look like it was a seal. Anyway I popped in the National 240698 and it's back on the road, and hopefully drier.
