Default 31 S/W emergency Brake Handle Question

My emergency brake handle (31 S/W Foredor) has a lot of side to side movement. I looked in the catalogs & find nothing that looks like it would stop the side to side movement. I am not sure I checked it before removing the floorboards & body, but would like to make sure it is correct before reassembly

Well, it could be any one of a couple of items. On the side of the handle assy, there is a bolt that allows the lever to pivot on the ratchet plate. If this bolt is not properly tightened, it can cause excessive laterial play. Also if the hole in either the plate or lever has been enlarged due to wear, this could cause it also. By chance do you know for certain whether your handle is an original or reproduction?

To start, I would tighten the pivot bolt to enture this is not where the wobbling is coming from. Also ensure the pivot plate bolts are firmly attaching it to the transmission shifter housing. Either of those two things might at least help some with your issue.

I don't know if the handle is stock or repop. The plate is about 1/4" thick & the opening in the handle where the bolt goes thru is about 1/2" wide. If I tighten the bolt it will squeeze the handle opening.

It almost looks like the whole bottom end has been pried open at some time. I'll look at one I have on the shelf tonight when I get home.

As CarlG saysthe opening seems to be modified. I would squeeze the bottom and sides together so there is little side play. JMO

I just looked at the one for sale in the swap meet section & it looks like mine has been spread apart like you said. Will squeeze it together.
Just have to wonder how it got spread apart. The mysteries of old cars are never ending
