I don't weld panels.. I burn holes. I couldn't think of a better man to pass on our project to keep it going. Flop will get it in order and fix my screw-ups too.

Between a 120 mile commute each day, starting a new full time job and helping out with with the father-in-law I had neither the time nor the patience to keep at it.

It'll go back together better and faster than I could make it happen.

Hey Flop, nice work but make sure you assemble the sub floor on a jig or a good frame for mounting hole alignment. I just mounted a pickup body that was repaired by someone else and the right side mounting holes were 1 inch forward of the left side, had to use a portapower and the rails broke apart while trying to line up. We ended up mounting then rewelding the rails in place. Those frame holes are the boss.

good tip barry!! i have the 30 roadster on that jig now so getting these lower subrail pieces sitting in is about as far as i can take it for the time being.

well everything was going to smooth....something had to not fit right.

repop subrails are the culprit!

as you can see the pad where the subrail connector rivets to the inner connectors isnt even close . the orig connector had a step in this area to move it back the 3/8 of an inch so the pieces mated as you can see in the pictures.

and the other side showing the same

thanks woodie! never rush is my tip on quality work.

well got the front subframe connectors all buttoned up today..

had to have a slit put in them so they would sit flush onto the other piece like a stock one would

after being widened and riveted together

in place. not rivited in just holding it in place

and both

now its time to put it on the jig and make sure we are square before i go any further

thanks vanspeed!!

well apparently there are no repops made of this connector from the door post to the cowl so i had to whip up 2 of em .

heres the first side. they resemble the original but the og pieces have a shape pressed into them . i cant get the shape pressed into 16 gauge plus they are never to be seen again once the car goes back together

and i started on the other side

thanks Country!1

finished up the drivers side bracket this morning thats they dont repop

then set the seat pan in transferred the rivet holes and got everything lined up there. the rivets arnt set just keeping the panel aligned . i didnt put the rear pan in because it will be much easier to work on the rear of the car with out that piece in.

moving back ward to where the new subframe was once welded on . it needed some help in my opinion

a few patches later and a little tig welding its looking a little better

and the connection on the drivers side after

got all the welds smoothed out

just another days work 28annie! but i do like taking the time to show folks what goes into bringing a car back the correct way .

this was a random hole cut here where there was a body mount

had to patch it before i put the subframe in

the subframe was cut to close to the brace so i couldnt clean up the weld nicely. so i cut out some of the new subframe so i could achieve that

and the new connection

One question for you, how do you get the welds that clean in tough to reach places? Dremel?

thanks everyone!!

Vanspeed i never really use a dremel . i grind with a 36 grit 6 inch disc on an electric sander . i also use 60 grit on a 3 inch roloc and a file.

29 -make sure you are working off a frame that is level and square .ill send you a message about the connectors

did some more work on Miles coupe today

put a patch in this riser .no sense on getting a repop when only 1 tiny section was rotted out

got it all smoothed out

this piece in my opinion this rear panel below the decklid is the biggest pain to get out of an A

after i got it out had to redrill and tap all 8 screw holes in the rear subrail

Excellent work, Flop! I am getting closer to taking my 29 apart to check just how solid it really is, so this thread is extremely helpful to me in case mine isn't as solid as it was reported.

well took a run to snyders today picked up the rear patch for Mile's coupe as well as a truck full of other things

heres the problem .

which in-turn sucked in the trunk gap

a little brass and a double panel!!

tacked in

about 75% done

no real complaints with the panel either a little tweaking here and there but no major surgery to it yet !

thanks folks!!

one of the biggest PAINS in putting together is this panel.

its a horrible fit from the get go . the "new bracing" is dreadful .

notice the giant twist

the orig panel was pretty . i transferred the orig bracing to the new skin . it fit alot better after that

Hey Flop,

There appears to be something like a "T" molding that runs down the back on each side of that panel from the top area. Is this something that is replaceable? If so, where could I find some???

Thanks

Not here...absolutly great work Flop...I am speechless to say the least.

What you are doing and have is a tallent that probably 99% of us on this fourm could not do ourselves without screwing something up.

What is the WORST job that you can remember in doing this kind of art and were you able to get it done or did you give up (which I do not think you are the kind of person to do).

Thanks for sharing your work with us!

thanks Tommy!!

now back to old Fords!!

got the back panel all tied together today and primed since it would be a bear to do with it all together .

tomorrow I get to tackle this which i doubt is going to be any fun either .

After some feeble attempts at doing it myself I quickly realized that I don't have the patience for sheetmetal and just burned a bunch of holes. 11ga or greater is more my speed. Its not like riding a bike. you do forget and if you don't exercise the 'skill' you lose it.
Also with the work to be done on the subrails it could have gone wrong very fast and folded like a house of cards.

If the car was going to get finished I needed help to get it done. These days I can only get a few hours a week to devote to it and often when I finish my 120 mile commute each day I'm far too spent to head for the shop.

Tom is several hundred miles from me and having him post progress pictures helps me see the work he is doing and to know that its in capable hands and progressing is a load off my mind. With all the stress of the last year being out of work for a while, moving my father-in-law to a nursing facility, we didn't need another worry wondering if we made the right choice in sending it to Tom.

Glad I never opened the box and left it to you when I brought up all the parts.

That's shoddy work, not only welded instead of riveted, but twisted and bent too.

With every picture you post It just reaffirms I made the right choice to send it up to you.

Flop,

You're doing some great work here... thank you for sharing with us !

Is this Ford a 49-A "Special Coupe" ? (Mid' 28- mid-29, had sedan-decking all the way down the back to the belt-line)

( I'm curious because I don't see any curved tin roof panel above the doors...)

A buddy helped me do some body-work on my Special Coupe last summer, and we can both attest that the lower trunk panel & related areas are a supreme pain to work-on !

Please keep us posted !

Glad to see some nice work. The Tig seems to be the way to go these days. I work mostly with MIG and Oxy/acety.

Here's 30 Coupe I'm working on. I'm at 600 hours to this point for metal work, prep, paint, polishing and starting to assemble.

Remember aftermarket means "Almost" fits !!!!!

I hope you enjoy.

That looks quite a bit better than when you started!!

Is the "crease" across the trunk lid an optical illusion?

The 'above the door' pieces were also worked on but are not in the picture. Without the wood to support them its kind of hard to have them just hang in mid air.

I picked it up yesterday and am very pleased with the work done. It was a 400 mile round trip and a very long day.

The PA Turnpike must have known I was coming so they setup another accident and slowdown just for me. The last 3 times I've been on that fool drive it has happened.

The price was reasonable and I hope that by Flop posting the pictures of the work done it gives people a chance to see his work and help him get more.

He was meticulous with the work done and I would give him our car again in a heartbeat.
He even prepped and painted the underside for me so it can go right on the frame. I won't have to make another trip to the paintshop at this point to keep going. I've gotten discouraged over the last year with the car to the point of dreading working on it but now that the metalwork is done I'm re-energized to keep moving.

Tom, (flop)

I know you'll read this and as I said I am very pleased with what you have done for us and I hope that using our car as a 'photo op' gets you more opportunities for your business.

The photos show many attachment poins between the floorpans, seat riser and subrails. Are they spotwelds or rivets.

Anyone knows how these were done originally ? Spotwelds, screws or rivets ?
