4wd 33
Yesterday we took the 33 out with the family for a trip down to a small town (Monto) about 250 miles round trip.
we stopped off at a disused railway town on the way back and drove up the access track for the old railway about 5 miles,it was rough, daughter inlaw was amazed at the rough terrain and how the 33 got along ,one spot we drove over was a big washout ,she said that she wouldn,t take her new Ford ranger through but I took it easy (I thought ) and drove through, well the left rear back wheel dropped into this BIG hole,Wife Carol in the back seat nearly got catapulted out, all the stuff in the back,( eskies and kettles etc) got thrown around, and she got sconed by the kettle.Lol We had a walk down through some old railway tunnels, these were full of bats ,and had sleepers that were not the usual square ones but just round logs with a flat chiselled in for the rail to sit on, We came back to the 33,what do you know it wouldn,t start,no drama, soon found out it was a loose wire on the IGN resistor,(from the rough driving maybe)easy fix. we drove another few miles to a camping area for lunch and while having lunch a big thunder storm came through,it poured down and we had to cross a small creek, again daughter inlaw was impressed. The 33 is now sitting in the shed.covered in mud and crud, but it is too hot out to wash it yet. As Old Henry says, these old cars are great time machines and good for exploring. Lawrie |

Re: 4wd 33
Sounds like a really nice adventure, glad to hear you aren't afraid to use your car!
I watched a Wyoming Public Broadcasting Service piece on the logging for ties for the Transcontinental Railroad here in the states (1800's). They didn't waste much effort on making the ties flat either. They needed something like 20 million ties, they didn't care too much what they looked like.

Re: 4wd 33
Thanks for sharing - as I understand it - that's the kind of terrain those cars were built to handle - more common than one would think as the roads in 1933 were a far cry from those today outside the city limits! The ride height and suspension flex was made for that torture! Unfortunately the passengers were not so lucky as you noted!

It looks like Carol is holding onto the steering wheel from the open rear door? Is this one of those Youtube mystery photos?

Great trip, sounds like it was a true adventure.
I think it looks like a railway spike she’s holding. |

Re: 4wd 33
Great story Lawrie. I've been through old tunnels near home on the old Rimutaka incline which is part of a cycle trail now. Thought of downloading a train whistle, and next I'd go and hide in one of the recesses of the longest one and let it off through one of those mini boom box things.... that would put the sh*ts up the others I usually bike with!

Re: 4wd 33
" Esky" is a "chilly bin" across the ditch here in New Zealand. I don'tknow what you call them in North America i would imagine "Esky" could be percieved as a little un- PC up there. Talking about "sconed" ..that happended to me the other day when the "boot lid".. sorry "trunk lid" fell down on my head.......here we go again!
PS: after a few years on the Barn we could all end up with a degree in International Linguistics GB

Re: 4wd 33
We were hoping for the V8 nationals ,but I doubt if we can make it.
But later in the year we plan on going to the A nationals in Murray bridge,But taking the model A means motels etc,but if we go in the 33 we will have the caravan and thats makes it easy. We will have a brand new A engine for sale so maybe the A pickup will be the go. Dont know when we will be back in tassie, but will be in the later year or next. Lawrie |
