I have my old BB up and running but the PTO drive shaft seal is leaking very badly. Has anyone replaced this seal? I found the part number in the green book but can't find anyone selling this particular seal. Do these seals still exist? I would greatly appreciate any advice on this thing.

Just go to your local bearing supplier,he will have them or be able to get them for sure.

some of the old pto's had a rope seal like a water pump. is there a way to tighten the cap holding the seal in place? if no cap, just measure the size of the shaft, and the size of the bore it sits in and go to any parts store and they will look up a seal from those specs

There were a few different manufactures of PTO’s, are you sure it’s the same one in the green book?

It is the ford design in the green book. I am going to scape it clean today and see if I can pull the PTO assembly off and inspect more closely. I am assuming that there were transmissions that did not come with the PTO option. Is there a blank cover that could go there instead? I have a deadline to get this thing rolling because we are running the Trans Sierra 88 vintage dirt rally in just under a month, and I still have not really test driven it. What could possibly go wrong... A first ever Nevada City, CA to Tahoe City, CA mostly dirt. Nothing newer than 1934.

most every 3/4 ton and larger transmission has an opening for a pto, they are a standard size, 6 bolt on the smaller ones, and 8 bolt on the big trucks. a cover should be easy to find at your favorite junk pile

The 1937 parts book show the PTO using felt seals. The green book shows the output
shaft seal as 51-7274-A NAPA number NOS8060 and the shifter seal as 8T-7274
NAPA number NOS5606.

Thats great info I will be ordering a seal from napa tomorrow and see if it works. Now I have to work through some electrical gremlins with the old wiring, ugh...
