'29 CCPU seat shopping - what do I need?

I'm in the market for a seat for my 1929 Closed Cab Pickup. This is what I'm working with.

I want to stay stock, so no minivan or S-10 or anything else. I've mentally swallowed the pill for the cost of a new complete seat from one of the current suppliers but I don't know what other mounting hardware I'm missing here and have no local reference to check. So what am I missing?

(I would also be in the market for any of the above if tall y'all have this for sale near St Louis, MO.)

There is a missing horizontal seat support board that goes between the floor pan and the bottom of the bench seat spring. It stands on edge. You can see the holes for its screws in the seat riser ends. Seat springs that fit properly and already upholstered are available from LaBarronBonney upholstery. Excellent quality and fairly priced.

Ill add to this - that missing board also has screws from under the cab into the board as well. (note the row of screw holes in the under seat pan) Study marcos pics - your center 2 seatback supports should have a pointy dagger things riveted to the wood towards the bottom - this is what holds the rear of the seat up.

Do i dare ask what the lebaron boney pre-upholstered seats cost? (probably a deal if one has no seat springs nor cover to work with or go by)

I do not know if the CCPU is different from the RPU, but this is what we had.

We had a piece of plywood in the shape of the bottom seat spring with holes drilled in to let air out when sat upon. The seat spring is attached to the plywood base, and the padding goes on top of the spring followed by the seat cover.

The only attachment is the board I attached to the bottom of the seat base, that will "lock" into the small pieces sticking out from the front rail which prevent frontward and side to side movement.

The back portion of the seat has padding and the seat cover, and it rests on top of the bottom seat assembly, and "clips" down in the rear top.

Hopefully your CCPU set up is similar. Ed Williamson

There shouldn't be any wood on the seat springs.

We have a reproduction LeBaron Bonney seat bottom.

You can see the two clips(circled) that slip into the loops on the seat riser in the truck.

We had to re-cover it as it was stored where mice could get to it.

If you want to have original Ford looking seats (i.e. stock), then LeBaron Bonney covered seats are not the way to go. They are not close to being correct unless they have changed in the last couple of years. They don't look at all like the originals shown in the above #5 post photo. If you just want to have seats that work, then use them.

Vendors sell the springs which are close to original. You will likely need these since finding usable original springs are just about impossible.

Page E62 of the RGJS has some info/pictures covering upholstery and backrest retainer hardware.

Neil, I have contacted you in the past regarding my 82-A cab....I am now getting things going and this thread thankfully stopped me in my tracks before ordering seat cover materials.....
Would you consider as Tom mentioned in post #13 that Classtique makes a closer to original set of covers????


Have contacted them but they have no images available showing there finished product...

The covers need to have a cord sewn around the bottom of the skirts so that they can be crimped into the channel around the lower edge of the springs. This is the way Ford did the installation. I used a local shop to make the covers and installed them my self. The result was not great for this first attempt.


Attached is a photo showing an installed cover. I will send your the photo folder if you email neil@aafords.com.



Vendors simply install the covers by wrapping them under the spring and use hog rings to hold them in place.


With a corded cover, the skirt must be the correct length to allow the spring to be compressed while the cord is crimped into the channel.

FWIW, here's a pic of a full L-B interior, including their springs upholstered by them, in a 30 82-B. It was installed 30+ years ago but I doubt L-B has changed it much since. It isn't an exact duplicate of original but is high quality and serviceable. It was easy to install and fit with very little "adjustment".

Thanks! Sadly, truck was sold many moons ago.

The last examples I saw, LB had the seam right on the edge with no tucks around the corners, which is not correct.
Classtique from Minnesota had the seam lower and had folds at the corners, as original seats have.

You may want to consider getting the modified seat springs.
The bottom cushion is 2 inches shorter and the upper spring is 2" taller.

It is recommended for taller drivers.

Also, some drivers do not use the back wood for the same reason.

This is not a great picture.....and I can't find one with the seats installed...

But this is a LB back and bottom for the 29 ccpu......easily 10 years old...maybe 20...

We had to remove the bottom cover and replace the jute and padding as a result of mice..but the cover was OK so we reused it.
