Color of steering column and wheel on 55 Ford
When did Ford paint the steering column to match the interior color of the dash as opposed to basic black? Would a 55 Customline 2 door wagon , 59B , have the column and wheel matching the color of the dash?

Unless one has an unmolested original or dedicated restoration car to look at, it may be hard to determine. The INTERIOR COLOR CHARTS of the period will give color keys.

Re: Color of steering column and wheel on 55 Ford
Steve, every one of the four 57 Fords I have/had had black columns and wheels. The interiors were Red/white, red/black and two were gray.

Re: Color of steering column and wheel on 55 Ford
Fairlane (top-of-the-line of the 3 series) was color-keyed to the lower color of the dash. Well, at least the white lower color of the dash in my Victoria carried through to the column and steering wheel. Customline (mid-price range) apparently used black wheel/column, and the Mainline (bottom-of-the-barrel model line) would have been one-color-fits-all, i.e. black. But, as Kultulz notes, check the paint charts to verify.

All Customline and Mainline models had black steering column and wheel. The Fairlane steering column and wheel were exactly the same parts. The Mainline column and wheel had a smaller hub in the center and the wheel only had a horn button, rather than a deluxe horn ring. There were two horn rings available for Fairlane and Customline series cars. They looked the same except for the power steering ring had a recess with the letters stamped into it "Master Guide Power Steering". The black paint that was used was a high-gloss black enamel, baked-on for hardness and durability. |

FWIW, my 55 Customline is black steering column and wheel as Dave pointed out. It looks to be original.
