That means that the Government Asbestos guys here in Australia would not have to remove all gaskets, clutch plate or brake linings. (They then send you a Bill for their labour). It would come straight through. Guys importing cars into Australia these days are having the brakes shoes removed in the USA prior to shipment. If it is a manual car, they have the motor removed, so that the clutch plate can be discarded. Also all exhaust gaskets are removed. It is no fun importing cars into Australia with these strict rules, so by buying one like this would pose no problems getting through. Anyone would think that these parts were radio active? Anyone working on old cars knows that you have to handle these parts with care because of the danger of Asbestos. I can't see the rule being relaxed any time soon.
Mercman : check this article out from yesterdays "stuff" an online NZ News blog.

Never knew about this asbestos rort until i read this. As the owner of Joe Walshes maserati ( that apparently does 185) I would not be happy with holes being drilled in it.

Skip No offence taken at all, my reply was purely "tongue in cheek". Aussies are bloody good blokes and being our "neighbours" there has always been a certain rivalry, but we both like to assert our individuality. I once mistook a Canadian for an American and got read my "pedigree" to me, albeit in a friendly way

Asbestos problems in imported cars. Graeme, as you say, bringing in a bare body to Australia is going to be much easier than importing a complete car. I asked an Importer who removes the brakes before shipping the car, what he did when the car arrives in Australia. I told him that it would be impossible to get replacement Shoes etc in Australia for American cars. I asked why he didn't get new brakes put in after they removed the old brakes? He told me that all USA brake linings etc contain a small percentage of Asbestos, and once again, the new brakes would not get through when they arrived in Australia. He told me he buys new parts from companies that sell complete brakes, and gets them mailed to his home. They come through to his door, with no questions asked - go figure.

Shipping costs vary.
Around $1500 USD to get it to a port from say the Mid-west.
Then around $2500 USD to ship it down here.
Apply the $ exchange rate, GST and other costs so you're probably looking around $5000 USD to get it into my shed. ( on top of the original purchase price )
And that's before you have started to do any work on it.

Chris,
You are a glutton for punishment. Why don't you post an album of your fleet and the fine restoration work you do.

I bought the 39 deluxe coupe and had it shipped down to New Zealand.
The new correct style floor has been fitted.
It needed a better chassis which I bought locally.
Work is progressing well.
The seller was excellent to deal with.
