Default Ford 292 road draft tube

OK, so I bought a 1960 Fairlane 500 with a 292. Have been researching the HAMB & Ford Barn to add a PCV and remove the road draft tube.. Some say the tube is in the rear block and some say in the valley pan. Either way, how is it attached? can the tube be removed with the engine in the car? Is the tube just pushed into a hole, threaded or a flange fitting? Any info will be appreciated

The birds had the tube at the back of the valley cover, most cars had it (as part of the canister assembly) up by the fuel pump. Later motors, I think only trucks by that point, had a PCV valve in the back of the valley cover. Blocking off the front location on the car, and installing a PVC in the valley pan is probably the most common, but there’s a variety of solutions. A modern carb will have a PCV connection, older carbs require a spacer.

Any of them will unbolt with the engine in, and can be modified. Might be a bit of a PITA, but unless you drive fairly long trips at good speed, it a worthwhile mod. Some guys in the desert might disagree, but up in the PNW, we need all the help we can get with condensation.

A lot of discussion on this at Yblock forever.

If the engine is original (1959 style up), the road draft and later OEM PCV System is shown below-

If you have the car at hand, why not look and see what you have.

Good idea.
What the car left the factory with and what it has 58 yrs later are very often different.

A PCV system is very simple. It seals the crankcase to outside air and dirt. It has a fresh air intake, on a Y block that is a filtered oil fill cap, and it uses engine vacuum to draw fumes through a valve. Air in - air out.

Thanks KULTULT. That's exactly what I needed. I could see the bottom but didn't know where it went to from there or how it was attached

My 57 Fairlane has it down below, behind the fuel pump. It attaches with a single bolt down through the middle. It's like 1 1/2" long maybe more. Has a filter and O-ring, plus a gasket. Concourse sells the filter kit.

1958 292 went to an upper mounted road draft tube. PCV came along in the 60/61 model year.
