Default 34 clamshell cover has 4 nuts & a thru bolt ?

Looking at the u joint clamshell cover , there are the 4 fastening nuts and at about the 4 o'clock position a protruding bolt ? ( so total of 5 holes in the cover )
Can someone tell me what the bolt is for how it should be treated ?

Thanks
Bob

The bolt goes top left . You are describing it upside down .

Possibly some are top left --this one is bottom right as mentioned

Seems a ridiculous place to machine for & run a ground strap ?

They fit either way .

Bottom right = upside down .

Unless your '34 is RHD V8, that nut was originally intended to be on the left side, closest to the battery and its terminals, a most logical position, as David J indicates. It would seem that somewhere along the way someone inadvertently assembled your torque tube-to-transmission retainer upside down.

I agree most logical would be upper left . As mentioned , some one must have rotated it unknowingly . Either way , to get a good ground there are many other more handy & cheaper places than inside that cover from a user & mfg cost effective standpoint .

Not necessarily given that the battery and its cables were originally installed before the body was placed on the chassis and it is a direct ground connection to the engine block via the transmission case. Further, service engineering was not in vogue during that era. Were it otherwise, the distributor would not be buried down in front of the engine.
