Default Distributor install

Got a little issue with a new Snyder's distributor that I received today. It seems that the lower shaft is not attached like the old one and will not stay put when I try to install it. Any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong or a suggestion or two that might help?

Did your old one have a long shaft?

The old shaft appears to be the same length as the new one. The old shaft will not come out of the old distributor housing so I can't tell if one is longer than the other.

The lower shaft should be separate of the top shaft, 2 piece shaft. Maybe the old shaft is rusted in place.

Okay, drop the bottom shaft into the distributor hole, take a screwdriver and turn it till it drops into the drive..it will drop in and stop turning.take the distributor cap and body off and line the pin on the bottom of the distributor with the little hole in the head..gently turn the rotor till it drops in.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I was just a little hesitant about dropping the lower shaft down in the hole in the head. But you never learn if you don't take good advice and run with it. Let you know how she runs when I get it back together. Got honey do jobs to do first.
Thanks again

I agree with Railcarmover in post number 5 . Just to add , the long one piece shaft was an aftermarket replacement . The original two piece distributor shaft gave a slight universal joint effect .
