Packing insert bearings
A few weeks ago, I was in touch by PM with a member of this forum about how we might be able to avoid grinding 0.010" off our crankshafts to go to the next undersized insert. I had a clean out of PMs and inadvertently lost his contact and I can't remember who it was other than he has a workshop and was going to do some research on one of my suggestions.
The person concerned will know who I mean. Please contact me again. Thank you.

Re: Packing insert bearings
All you have to do is babbitt the inserts---then you can bore them any size you want
There used to be "semi finished" inserts made for some applications, they were bored to size in a fixture Depending on the construction of the insert in question it masy be possible to make a .010 insert into say .005 --if the steel backing is all the same thickness and the undersize is made with bearing material |
