GL 1 tranny oil

Transmission oil in 80/90 weight in other than GL5 blend is virtually non existent in Canada and Australia, it seems. Imagine my surprise when I went into a farm machinery dealership today and found eleven quarts of GL 1 on the clearance rack. It was packaged for Troy Built rear tine tillers.

Good job keeping your eyes open, I snaged a 5 gal. can of GL1 from my local Walmart about five years ago on clearance.( I needed it for my 8n).

SAE-50 100 grade aircraft engine oil works just fine. Most countries have an airport with an FBO that sells the stuff or a distributor of motor oils that does. SAE-50 motor oil is same viscosity as SAE-90 gear lube.

TSC sells GL1 90 for tractors, should not be a problem finding. My understanding is TSC is a Canadian company.

Looks like NAPA as well. This is GL-1 80W90. If your interested W is for Winter, not Weight.

Thanks for the reply.... unfortunately Tractor Supply is an eastern thing, with stores only in Ontario, a couple of thousand miles away... NAPA Canada apparently won’t import the gear oil from NAPA US, although they bring up most everything else... chevron sells it here, but a call to their head office says 6 to 8 weeks minimum...

That is strange, any tractor/farm supply should be able to get it fairly easily. A lot or farm equipment uses it. Might ask a COOP (not sure what such an organization is called up north) what they use as a substitute. Farm supplies are all over the place in Kansas, so hard to relate!

I agree! I’ve been on the phone today with Case/IH, new holland, and a couple of others.... no luck... they just use GL-5, at least according to whomever is answering the phone...also called UFA, United Farmers of Alberta, who can get the Chevron product.... maybe by December... Alberta looks like Montana, lots of farms and tractors and farm suppliers and dealers up here as well... I agree, doesn’t make sense...

you don't have to use GL1, you can use GL2 or GL3 or GL4 - anything apart from GL5 really.

I looked, make that searched, for a couple of years across western Canada to try non GL-5 gear oil. A few young parts managers didn't know there was a rating. Got the standard answer - "GL-5 will be just fine". This advice was consistent from plenty of service managers, newly trained technicians and even head offices/research departments of oil companies. Not convinced, i kept my eyes open and ultimately cleaned out a farm dealership which sells the line of Troy-Built rototillers.

Doesn't Tractor Supply in Canada have an on-line store that will ship to you at reasonable cost? They do here in the US.

The words reasonable cost and shipping officially can no longer be used in the same sentence in Canada. Tractor Supply stores are not conveniently located across our land. Nearest one is 2500 miles east of my location. That's a long way by dog sled or stock flathead Ford. By the time I'd get there all my yellow metal would be flaky.

You will find a Co-op store in almost every town in Saskatchewan I'd guess. They offer a wide range of oils for many purposes. This pdf chart lists the various oils and their properties. Notice the Sonic MP gear oil (with CGT) is described as "an ashless oil designed to eliminate chemical reactions with yellow metals such as brass.

Thanks to all who provided leads... I’ve located a source locally for 90W GL1 and another for 140W, also GL-1, both requiring product ordering (non stock items), and have ordered a 5 gallon pail of each.

If the orders are successful, I’ll post the info....

Update on my search.... the 140 wt arrived first, still waiting on the 90w.... as promised, here’s the details on the 140w:

Available supposedly throughout Alberta at Red L Distributors, 15.9 L for $97.07 plus tax... in the Calgary area call 403 720-2872, product number 223037-783, made by chevron. I’ll provide info on the 90w if it shows.

GL-5 can be used in rear axles with no problems. As I mentioned before, SAE-50, 100-grade ashless dispersant aircraft motor oil (with no Lycoming additives) is the same viscosity as SAE-90 gear oil. It is more highly refined than GL-1 and will not hurt any phosphor bronze bushings in transmissions. I've gone to a lot of airports around the country to purchase it for my motorcycles when traveling that way and have never had a problem finding it. SAE-140 is kind of heavy for transmissions and may cause shifting problems and especially in cold weather. If a person uses SAE-140 in a transmission due to leaks, they should fix the leaks.


I prefer AeroShell W100 but AeroShell 100 straight mineral can also be used. I use this in my 51 Mercury car transmissions with electric overdrive and it works well.

Just a tip, the "w" is for "winter" rating of oil/lubes, it is not for "weight". SAE 140 viscosity automotive lubricants do not normally get rated at winter temperatures. The same applies to SAE 90, 85w in normally the highest viscosity of lubricant with a winter temperature rating. In multi-viscosity rated lubricants would be listed something like 85w/140, which would be a viscosity rated at 85 using the winter rating temperature and 140 using the high temperature (normal) rating temperature.
