My first A,Truck set itself afire.Rewired all except lights(not affected). It now starts and runs fine for about 15 sec. then it dies. and does this repeatedly.
Does not run long enough to trouble shoot anything. Can someone give me an idea?

Check your gas flow into the carburetor, right to the float bowl. If restricted, symptoms you describe would occur.

Is the gas on, does it start right back up or do you have to wait???
When it stops see if you have a good spark at the plugs.

No, I don't have to wait, it starts right back I assumed that I had good spark because it started so easily. I will did check for dirt in the carb. It was clean.

Check to see if your gas cap has rotated internally and blocked off the vent hole. Start the car up with the gas cap off and see if it will continue to run.

Definitely sounds like you are starving for fuel. Float valve not opening? Vent in gas cap. When you say it fires right back up does it still run the same length of time? I cannot imagine anything electrical that would cut out that quick then fire right back up. Let us know what you find.

Could your fuel line be going too far into the carb and or the filter bowl restricting flow? Check the ends of the fuel line and just circumcise the end of the tube at the ferrule. very common.

My thoughts are the carb bowl fuel level is dropping down and the engine is running out of gas.To eliminate this theory they sell a tube to verify the height of the fuel in the carb bowl,I would install one and watch it,if the level drops and the engine quits you found the problem.

you need to find if its spark or fuel. put a spark tester. or leave a strap sitting on a plug contact so you can see it sparking and see if the spark stops before the engine does or does it follow it till off. the bowl should have more than 15 seconds in it i would think. Havent tried on the A but most things like to run for about a minute before drying out the bowl. If your carb has a drain like a tilly. you can check flow to bowl by pulling the drain with fuel on.

I thought I'd check the float level, found it too high, when trying to remedy this I found the fuel inlet valve not working to shut off the gas. So I took it out threw it in trash(new)and replaced it with original one(?). IT fired up as usual and ran until I shut her down! This was after I tried removing the inlet strainer, checking the vent in gas cap, and starting without gas cap. Thanks for all the help!

according to Tom Endy who posts on this forum some of the new float valves have minute brass chips in the needle and seat.He claims if you remove the plastic washer the needle will come out and with a magnifying glass you can remove the small chips. You might want to retrieve the valve from the trash!
