Default 1946 ford super deluxe

Alright guys I am back. I got my old 46 Ford running great. Cooling fine, after I deleted the high dollar fan shroud and air conditioning condenser. Car runs 180, 185 at 70 mph.

Question: Got a 355 gear 5 speed overdrive 59 AB motor 2-97 dueses running off 1-97 carb. what should be gas mileage, getting 11 mpg now? Do you think that I should get more, if I run 2 not a hot rod motor, small cam alum heads, that is it nothing fancy.. Just a driver..

Are you saying you are running just one carb on a dual carb manifold? Can't help thinking it would be better with two. That's pretty tall geared, 3:55's and an overdrive. The car isn't very aerodynamic, it will be pretty thirsty at 70.

I will watch with interest what others say, I just wanted to clarify the carb situation.

Mart.

I just went through the exercise with "Uncle Max" Musgrove (the Stromberg man) on my plugs and the mileage & high speed jets size. I am getting 14 to 15 MPG with 2-97 carbs, mild cam, Offy heads and C-4 automatic. Mildly sooty on the edge of the plug, but light brown on the electrode and ceramic. Max felt that my mileage was normal with .043 high speed jets and the plugs look fine, so I am going to stop looking for trouble where there isn't any.

Your getting very poor mileage. I have about the same set up. 40 coupe, 3:55 gears. T-5 trans, My flathead is probably a little bigger than yours. 276ci, pretty hot track cam, Offy heads, four 97 carbs. direct linkage. I get 18mpg on secondary roads on a 100mile trip. Of course if I just putted around town I'd get less. 2 yr's ago, same thing with two 94 on a trip from Me. to Cape Cod Ma. all turnpike, 60mph with GPS turning 2000rpm all the way, got 23 mpg. SO, if you just putter around town all the time your mpg is probably all right but on a good trip you should get good mileage with all those gears. Walt
