Well, they were not exactly tight in the frames even when new.

Can you tell where the wear might be? If it's in the bushing in the windshield frame, you might insert a cleavite bushing. If it's in the pass through of the shaft and resulting from wear of use or vibration, then you might have to rebuild the part. Or possibly replace it with the repop now available. Not exact but pretty close? (I confess I haven't compared them side by side.)

It is hard to get them to work the way you think a wiper should work. Guess I don't have any recommendation except to put on a electric or vacuum one.

Unfortunately the open cars, such as my 28 Phaeton, just have a hole drilled through the top winshield frame tube, so the 2 holes offer very little support and wear out quickly. I wonder if a person could weld a tube though the top winshield frame tube and file the ends smooth, so it looked original but had full support like the closed pickups. Mine is also very loose, so the hand wiper is pretty useless. Rain-X is the real answer to driving in the rain.

These hand wipers are really only for appearances. Maybe they satisfy the cops who only want to see something there but they are useless. Like Tom says, Rainex is the way to go.
