Default Front galley plug

I understand the front galley plug on a 59 ab is a plug but based on length and style it must serve another purpose. Can anyone explain how this works.
Thanks Rick

The extended diameter on the front plug (beyond the threaded portion) was to restrict the flow of oil coming through that galley and going into the timing gear area.
