Default What IS this serial number?

I would really appreciate some help with this....

I can't tell if it starts with AA14... or AA4... or..???? then there's a 198...number below it...???

I'm new to this forum but I do have a Model A engine and VERY little Model A knowledge. Sure appreciate some help.

I found lists of S/N's and dates but don't know what number to use...

thanks very much.

Jim

Im thinking the motor came out of a model A big truck, not sure about the numbers below, the truck could have been re-vined @ one time , do you have a title?

The face of the number boss is smooth. This tells you the original number has been removed. The font used in the numbers on it are NOT Ford font or size. Bottom line is that it is a serial number that has been altered.

Thanks very much for the feedback. Very much appreciated.

I don't have a title. The engine was on a Pietenpol airplane. I don't suppose there's any other way to find out when it was built?

AA484690*. The 1 looks extraneous and stamped with a harder blow. The number below is a later stamping, with a smaller height font, IMHO.
Per Pluck's research/site the fonts are the earlier style, so that eliminates the * at the end from actually being a 4, as that would make the number too large/late for use of that font.

USE JB Weld on the numbers on the bottom and that extra 1 to fill them in and call it a day

If you have a copy of the "Service Bulletins" you can look inside the lower engine to spot the differences and give the engine an approximate time period of build.

I believe the original engine number stamping is *AA4846904* ; this number equates to October 1928. The 6 and 9 are the early type numbers.

The other stampings are no doubt later and I would not even try to make a guess as to what they mean or when it was done ?

RE;Pietenpol airplane
The lower number could be an FAA number.

Ron

???

One too many digits for an OCTOBER 1928 number. If you are saying the stamping has the following SEVEN DIGITS, 4846904, that would be a MARCH 1932 number. I don’t see any before or after the seven digit number. For comparison, take a look at my MARCH 1932 number AA4848750that is close to the last OEM number for any Model A and takes up the entire length of the number pad.

Notice how the numbers on the engine directly above are in line and straight. This is how numbers were stamped at Ford. They were held together in a mandrel and stamped all at once. Not the hap hazard crocked numbers on the engine in question. There is no doubt that it is a re stamp.

Al,

I screwed up when I typed the number, should have been: *AA484690* . I believe the last stamping is a *, not a 4 .
