Default 1968 galaxie 500 ignition problem

Hey there. I've got a 68 galaxie 500 that I lost the ignition key to. Our town doesn't have an automotive locksmith that does on site visits. I'm aware that I can drill out the cylinder to remove it but was wondering if I could just disconnect it and remove the entire Unit. The ignition cylinder is in the dash (not the steering column) so I have good access to the whole unit and wiring. Am I able to disconnect the wiring and remove it as a whole?

Thanks for any help!
