1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
Guys maybe someone can lead me in the right direction. As I continue to take apart the 39 Deluxe I am working on I find new issues. I got the rear drums off and they do not look good, worn really bad. Did some searching and seems they are not reproduced. I am not sure of the 40 Ford wheel bolt pattern, is it the same as the 39 or it a smaller circle? if the same seems like the hub looks very similar to the 39 but the wheel bolt pattern seems smaller at least in the pictures?
Thanks, Don |

I believe '40 is 5 on 5-1/2.

Makes sense, it does look like a smaller pattern.

37 and 38 will work . 39 was a 2 piece drum hub. 36 will fit but has a different bearing and seal

Will 37 and 38 Drums fit? Found a used set but price seems high at 250 plus shipping but don't seem to be too many around.

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
Here is an option if you are not going for a totally stock restoration and/or you cannot find 36-39 rear drums .... btw, it's easier to find the 36-38 rear drums vs the 39s in my experience ....
You can use the 40-48 pass car rear drums and run an adapter from American Racing (they are steel, not aluminum) to go from the 5.5 pattern to the wide 5s. They use them on circle track cars to do exactly the same thing so you know they are strong enough. Your only issue might be that the studs could be a little short. I run the adapters on the front of my avatar and the studs are just long enough - the lug nut fully covers the stud but I am running f100 front brakes and those studs could be a tad longer. You can order longer studs however .... Not exactly as Henry intended it but it is an option .... One final thing - there are two sets on eSlay for sake. They aren't cheap but maybe they are close enough to ouck up. Also, check the HAMB classifieds ...

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
I may have some drums that will work for you. Not sure until I go check them out. Problem is, I am flying out tomorrow to Hawaii, returning in a week, and it is too late tonight. Don't know if you can wait that long to even see if mine might work for you. You can have them for the cost of shipping. The spare drums I have may even be for the fronts. Too many parts laying around. I will try to check emails when in heaven's land.

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
I looked up the bolt pattern for a 39 rear brake drum and it said 5X4 3/4". I have replaced the drums and hubs on my 41 and they are 5X 5 1/2, I had them turned by a guy with a lathe, since no shop has the equipment to do them with the tapered hole. I thought I had one with run-out but it was the axle. I'd be leary of selling them to someone, not knowing if they were good or not.Al

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
Thanks, was thinking I would have to get the 40 style wheels, sounds like a viable option if nothing is available.

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
What wheel do you have on your 39? Is it a wide five wheel? Can you show us a picture of your wheel. If it is the stock wide five wheel, you have to have a wide five brake drum. It has the large bolt pattern. Lets figure out what you have on there.

Re: 1939 Ford Deluxe Rear Brake Drums
It's the wide 5 but there are adapters available as Tom T mentioned to go from the 5.5 to the wide 5.
