Most small air compressors use SAE 30 non-detergent oil. Special compressor oil is available. However, the old Sears vertical fin compressors recommended 10W-30 with API SF designation, but I would not use the current multi-grade oils.

Compressor oil is a bit more expensive since it is much more highly refined in order to take the pressures involved. I always get compressor oil but then my compressor is a big one. I change the oil once a year whether it needs it or not.

I have a Quincy 5hp dual stage compressor. I put 30wt regular non detergent oil in it and started getting more oil in tank. I switched back to Quincy 30wt oil and it cleared up.I have had it about 25 years and thought I would have to rebuild it.

Made the oil seem like a good buy. So I would recommend compressor oil.
