Default 85W-140 for my Ride

32 roadster with flathead, 39 trans, 36 rear end, and F-1 steering box. I have plenty of 85W-140 on the shelf and would like to use it in the trans and rear end. I assume no problems there. How about the steering box?

I do appreciate the good knowledge on this forum.

Hey "q" ,
I use 85/140 on anything with a gear box daily and have had no problems. I only suggest that you don't mix manufactures or grades and never mix standard with synthetic . It causes severe foaming and foaming bubbles popping eats away at everything including metal. Enjoy sincerely Bob

The transmission may leak some with the 85/140.

For the steering gearbox, I used straight STP. My gearbox had no seal on the sector shaft, but it didn't leak.

And so what gear lube will not leak.

Can't imagine why that would leak, unless there are other problems.
I use 75-90 in Trans, O/D, Rear axle and Steering box. No leaks

The gear lube that was spec'd is 600W. Before I rebuilt the transmission in my '47 it leaked around the shifter forks in the side cover, it also leaked around the counter shaft. I put thicker gear lube in and it did help. After went thru it I put 600W in and have had good success with it.

You might want to check the bottle and make sure it specifically lists manual transmissions in the application. IIRC gear oils that are used for Hypoid gears have additives that will attack the bronze synchronizers. When I looked for 75-140 gear oil at my local parts house for my '49 Ford truck 4 speed, I looked at several different bottles before I found one that specifically listed for use in manual transmissions. The oils for hypoid axles didn't list transmissions in the usage. Mark

There were several post about what weight to use, I was told that after 1931 the transmission moved to 140 weight, that is what I now use in early fords. Last couple of weeks the temperature was down in the teens, I went to move my AA dump truck out of a car trailer and it took both hands to gentle move the transmission, I let it set until we got a couple of days in the 50's and moved to garage. Will have to look up the search again to find the information.

Above freezing called for the thick stuff [ SAE 160 ] in 1934 . Below freezing called for the thin stuff [ 110 ] in 1934 . At 32*F SAE 140 is pretty thick so I wouldn't recommend it for winter driving in cold climates .

Bruce, I am not 100% certain of what year Ford called for the thinner oils but it seems to me you either correct or very close.

Ross, My local parts store didn't have the Valvoline gear oil. I'm glad to know it will work. I guess the e-mail from Valvoline did explain why some brands of gear oil are not suitable for transmission use, so if you use another brand you should still check the bottle for application. Mark

It will work fine. If anything leaks, it is because of a mechanical problem, not the oil.
If you try straight PowerPunch or STP in the steering, you might think you have power steering.
