Default 40 front bumper

Went to install my front bumper today, I find that the brackets [new Drake style] are incorrect for the bumper, [Drake bumper]. The holes in the brackets are about 2 1/2" closer together [inner and outer brackets] than the holes in the bumper. The rear is fine. I have a std so ordered the std brackets, but bumpers are same. What am I missing here?

I just installed my 'Drake' front and rear bumpers on my 1940 Ford coupe. In both cases the outside holes lined up nicely, but the inner brackets had to be pushed into position. I also had a 1939 bumper where the holes are lined up differently than a '40' Ford. Be sure that the brackets sent are correct for the 40 Ford.

Well, after deciding I was gonna make it fit, pushing, pulling, prying and prayin, it's on. If anyone backs into me they will be propelled away at an alarming rate, lol. The back just lines up and bolts on. I have heard that deluxe and standard's use different brackets because of the grill, maybe that is the reason for the hard fit???? I know that Lawson feels that it should all fit like rear bumper, but I am just tickled to be able to buy the parts. It seemed like it would never come together, but it is.

Standard bumper irons only bring the bumper in closer to the grill than deluxe because the deluxe grill sticks out further.

Are you sure you are installing them correctly?
If I remember
The inner ones go on the inside of the frame horn …. Outers on the outside….yes?

That is correct, brackets sandwhich the frame. Spoke with a local guy who recently installed front bumper with same difficulties. Don't know if it is bumper or brackets, but something seems to be not quite right. Just glad I got them installed and the back was a cinch. Since the rear bumper fit so nicely, I'm guessing it is front brackets causing the problem.

Went thru the same thing with the front bumper on my '36; rear ones matched up perfectly.

I used the new Drake brackets with repo bumpers on my 40 Standard and they fit fine on both front and back.
