Question Re: Winnsboro Texas Autumn Trails?

Is there an Host Motel or? Not much info on Dallas Model A Ford Site Or Winnsboro's City Events site? I have been there before but been many years ago. Maybe Winnsboro hasn't changed much? Thought they had more than one motel these days?

pretty much all hotel rooms, and bed & breakfast rooms in winnsboro are booked out a year in advance, everyone just rebooks at their checkout. The closest rooms will be available in Sulphur Springs, and many model a people commute back and forth all weekend. The next closest town that a couple of people stay in is quitman.

Also the friday night stew is at the willis farm. If youre leaving downtown heading towards sulfur springs about 2 miles out of town there is a rail road track that crosses the highway. As soon as you pass over the tracks there will be a dirt drive way immediately on your left. Pull in the driveway, and find a parking spot. Stew will be served in the barn.

"Good time was had by all". You got that right triumphroy. "Hope everybody got home safe and sound". Well, thats another Model A story. The coupe ran purrrrrrfect for the 50 mile trip from Van to Winnsboro early Sat morning, the performed beautifully during the slooooow motion parade, the ran great from winnsboro to mineola. Had to leave early, cause 'le Coupe's headlight aint so good. Got about 3 niles west of Mineola on U S 80 and suddenly heard this rattling/growling/grinding sound for about 2 seconds and bdffore I could stop she quit for me. Coasted about 1/10 mile while trying to think "what just happeded. Next thot, just start her back up and see what happens. She started juz fine-ooooh, this is good , right. Smooth as ever and no unwanted noise. Put her in 1st gear and she wont move. Okj lets see if 2nd gear works. Then 3rd then 4th. all gears are Ok, but she wont move like the brakes are locked up. Got our climbed under to see if brakes are locked up - not a fun thing on the shoulder of U S 80 with cars wizzing by at 70 mph. Brake are not locked up, so lets try one more tine, this time a little harder. First gear will move the car about 1 foot but this tteerrriibble grinding racket. Ok folks it time for help to come. I am about 15 miles from home, wife is at work, so called my daughter to come get me. Now i will have to listen to the "I told you sos". But a least I got home. While waiting for hte daughter I got offered a ride in the most beautifulred/orange 1969 Chevelle SS. Rode with him to a nearby intersection off he highway and in the shade to wait. At home I Hitched the trailer to the tru ck and went back, wenched her onto the trailer and broght her home. A big Burly gentelman stopped and offered help hand wenching her onto the trailer. That was appreciated. There are still a lot of good samaritans in this world especially when an old car/man is in trouble.

She, Mibble, has been faithful for 9 years and far ove 20,000 miles since restoration. I aint gonna complain about her. Me thinks i destroyed the Rear End. She is still on hte trailer. Will get pulled into the shop today and tear down this week . Keep you posted.

Sorry about your trouble, Ken, tough break. We managed the 300+ mile round trip with no trouble this time. The last time we drove our coupe to Winnsboro four years ago we were rear-ended on US 80. I still aint over that.

The rear end getting locked up was also my first thought. Had it happen to a Corvan I bought in the late 60's, and when it happened it happened all of a sudden with only a second's notice. I didn't even have time to pull off the road. You were lucky you could coat to the side.

O K FB'ers. Here is chapter 2. Sunday morning I could not stand the idea of not knowing what happened to 'le coupe. She was disembarked from the trailer and towed into the open area of my shop where I have a chain hoist and the disassembly began. It did not take long to get the rear end out from under her. Nuts and bolts removed, pins removed, Ujoint cover removed and shocks disconnected, the the whole rear end of the car lifted by the chain hoist leaving the rear end and wheels on the ground. Then rear end was rolled out from under.

Torque Tube removed from Banjo, then using my pinion puller the Drive Shaft along with the Pinon and the Race and bearing were removed from the Banjo. What you see in the picture is what I found. I have not dissassembled the Ring yet. Some of the metal from the pinion is stuck to the Ring Teeth, but the Ring Teeth do not have near the damage that the pinion has. Mostly scratching and nicking. Dont worry, guys, no way am I going to put that Ring back in the Rear End. Also there is no damage to the Spider Gears - none. Strange.

The Races in the Axel Housing are not the least damaged so I keep and use the Baking Plates, Brake assembly and Axel Housings. While apart I will replace all bearings and Ring and Pinion and hopefully back "on the road again".

I am still curious as to why. The only warning was a racket not unlike grinding into second gear - you know that sound all of us make sometime-, then the engine backfires and died. The grinding lasted less than one second. One more odd thing. On the side of the road the Banjo area around the Pinon was HOT. Smoking on the outside HOT.

Gotta do a lot of getting ready for the November 8 Hillclimb tommorrow, so will have to take the day off from Mibble repair - resuming repair on Wednesday.

Meantime take a look at the new post at the top and its accompaning flyer about the Hillclimb. Ken
