My truck came with added on shocks and coil springs in addition to the single leaf set up.the stock shocks are gone.i can reuse the aftermarket shock mounts with some dressing up but are the coil springs necessary?

Heavens NO! That sounds like someone with dung for smarts got completely carried-away with one of the dumbest "SOLUTIONS" to a problem requiring a much more reasonable, and acceptable approach to what was likely, a sagging rear spring. DD

Toss the single leaf and put a stock spring in the back. Get rid of those coils that are around the shocks.

Just need to see what you have with the coils removed. If it is low in the rear it may need the spring replaced or re-arched.

I'm not sure why the beefed up suspension. The bed isn't big enough to haul much. well see when I get the coils off how she sits

I misunderstood your description of single leaf . If your currently have the factory spring and its in good shape just use the tube shocks . What was the addition of coil overs used for ? More height , carrying a load , compensate for worn spring ? I know its only a guess as to what the previous owners intention was unless its obvious. What got me was the single leaf as they are made aftermarket with just one leaf . Ive even seen all the leaves removed except the one connected th the shackles and over load coil springs bolted to the axle under the frame rails .

Ggmac, I was confused also by the single leaf. Thought maybe it was one of those Mono Leaf springs.

Do you have a spring spreader , aka spring removal/ install tool ? Expect to replacethe shackles if original .
Your plan sounds good , leaf springs take a special grease.
