Valvoline VR-1 Racing
I've been using this for years in all of my cars and motorcycles, including my '36, as an easy way to get adequate zinc levels in the oil.I don't own a vehicle with a catalytic converter (my modern car is a diesel). Went to my local NAPA yesterday and the counter guy said it has been ordered off the shelves, presumably by the California State Air Resources Board. Yet another intrusion on my life by the Great State of California!! Can't wait for them to mandate GPS tracking of my driving in order to increase the road taxes-that's when I'll finally leave! Rant over.
Adam

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
I have it shipped in from "Summit". Buy enough to get over the $100 free shipping total and it comes right to your door. Its also cheaper than NAPA from them.

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
You may be able to still get the VAL855 because it is rated "for off road only".
It is more expensive but works fine. |

Americas Greece - The Banana Republic of California. It's one party government mobbed up by corrupt government unions, socialists/liberals, pseudo victims, enviro-nazis, nannies and lobbyists. California should be invaded by Red China to give it Democracy!....

Time to put on the right signal, apply the brake, find a safe place, pull off the road, set the park brake and check the map.

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
I'll try Summit although I'm wondering now if they will be able to ship it to California. Obviously there are other sources of ZDDP additive (at least for now), it's the state intrusion that gets me. Yes I understand this is not so critical for flatheads, but I have a bunch of other flat tappet vehicles where it probably is significant. I go through a lot of oil, the flattie ('36 poured bearing 221 motor) gets changed every 1000 mi, the BMW and Triumph every 1000 miles, Alfa every 3000, etc.
Along those lines, how about the EPA's current attempt to force all vehicles driven in racing competition to have completely intact emissions equipment, the same as if they were driven on the road,or face a $37,500 fine?!! Adam

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
Unfortunatly Vermont is also a nanny state. All these new regs. are the work of those who never created anything or had the pleasure of starting up an old engine or knocking out a dent in a 16 ga. fender.

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
CA. sucks more than CT. But I am sure if CA. is doing it CT. will be next. I also use VR-1 and have been for years. Good stuff.

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
Man, the wife and I were thinking of moving to SoCal during retirement. May need to reconsider.
We loved it when we visited there over the past two summers. Seems like a great place, with amazing weather, and pretty cool people. May need to look a little deeper under the covers... |

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
But to get back to the question posed; go with Chevron Delo 400; 1480ppm zinc, the last time I checked a couple of years ago..

Re: Valvoline VR-1 Racing
What about this? Maybe the "not street legal" oil is the way to go, makes sense.
