updraft. Yeah taper locks work well. I use a smaller one on the steering shaft when pressing on a new worm .

Hi y’all
I’ve tried the KRW pinion removing tool. It just won’t clamp onto the drive shaft tight enough to not slip if the one you’re trying to remove is at all difficult. I got one of the trick pullers from Steve Mitchell and a few hours of work along with 2 18” pipe wrenches and the pinion assembly popped right out. His rig tightens down very well and does not slip. Mitchell makes an excellent pinion puller. They also make an excellent rear hub puller. I have both of them.
