Default Carburetor and manifold combination

I have a 100hp engine with Offenhouser heads, headers,Edmonds dual intake.I need to buy two carbuators and am considering Stromberg 81. Would there be any down side versus 97. I just cruise and not race and looks cool with duals over single. Would I increase gas milage. Should I use streight or progressive linkage. Apreciate your advise.

My avatar roadster has 2 97s and my 32 5w has 2 81s. When jetted right I don't notice a big difference in mileage. If it gets cold in your area, and if your manifold doesn't have heat risers, the 81s can ice up like the old VWs used to. I am running my 81s on an old Eddie Meyer manifold and have seen ice on the outside of the bases. Those are small holes to be sucking all that air through. Plus the 81s are really expensive.

Stromberg 81s are a popular option in pairs where there is no great need or desire for much carburation. They look just like the other three bolt Strombergs for Ford. There may be some surprises such as sensitivity to accelerator pump volume traceable to the intake manifold. Stumbling and flat spots resulting. Most advice for double carbs jump to the straight linkage, but I had a formerly twin manifolds that thrived on a single carb such as my single adapted slingshot which I regrettably let go. Progressive linkage would not be the same kind of problem with the dual plenum. Not your situation.
Fuel mileage, hard to get trustworthy information there.
Don't forget the much more affordable Holley 92 for your small carb needs.
Good Luck: Fred A

Dual 97's is your best bet. These can be purchased brand new. Not the poor 9super7 knock offs from speedway, genuine Stromberg 97 made in the UK. Or 97 rebuilds are available from folk on this forum. Max, is generally the go to Guy for New and rebuilt Strombergs, but there's other guys not banned from here that can sort you out.
Do research before spending money.
Good luck,
Martin.
