Default Water pump end play

Changing the head gasket on my 30' & noticed there is about 3/16" in & out free play in the water pump. What is considered a normal amount, if any?

Some recommend 0.006 to 0.0010 end play -- 0.006 sounds better.

One quick fix is to install a water pump shaft thin collar with a Teflon washer sold by vendors for under $4.00 to take up end play -- install immediately prior to installing fan -- fan hub hides it.
