Animal problem

I know this is off-topic but I need a solution to squirrels eating the wiring harness's in my vehicles. They ate nine wires out of the harness in a Nissan p/u. They ate the harness almost in half TWICE on my Maxima and just now I was checking the cars and noticed they ate two wires in the harness of my 08 Camry. These cars sit in the driveway - my A and Chevy Impala live in the garage as they are not drivenmuch. If they attack my 2011 Tundra there is going to be carnage in the Cul-D-Sac!

Has anyone experienced this problem and I'm at wits end to stop these damn squirrels. Thanks

Yes, squirrels love wiring, have been known to be the cause of many home fires. Trap and shoot or trap and relocate, I prefer the latter, you may chose otherwise

Hummmm, there is a large chipmunk living somewhere on the property, perhaps it was him on this latest incident. I tried the county animal control and "nothing we can do". Perhaps someone will chime in with a humane solution.

I have seen this many times with customers cars, these little pests seem to have different tastes, some love the wiring, others the radiator hoses, and the party rats love the windshield washer hoses for the alcohol.

One laughable solution I heard was to go to a wrecking yard and buy what ever makes them happy and leave it laying under the vehicle, at least this would save them the climb up to the engine compartment.

I tried everything from rubber snakes to repellant and traps. Only way I could solve my problem was get an outside cat. The cats never seem to catch any but they keep them away from the house. After spending over a grand on repairs the cats are cheap insurance. If you have comprehensive insurance on your vehicles you can file a claim.

Hi William,

Can't blame you for not wanting squirrels to die & smell in the neighborhood -- plus when dead, they could attract lice, mites, & God knows what.

Plastic owls work for a few days until they realize that the owls are fake.

With Christmas coming maybe you can buy your wife a nice Christmas present for "your" Model A.

Hope this solves "your" problem -- but, down the street, some neighbors may miss work when their wires get attractive -- oh well -- every problem has a solution & every solution has a problem -- such is life.

I had a cat problem and bought a trap at Tractor supply as a bonus it was 2 traps for 25 bucks .

Large trap and small one for squirrels, so far 4 cats have entered the relocation program .

They now live at a local lake near me .

Ha ha I can seek comfort I am not alone with this problem - ok, before I try the repelent I'll check out the electronic measures. The cat idea has some appeal, I'll discuss it with the dog.................thanks again

I work in the broadcasting field. Rats and mice eating wiring is a BIG problem at remote transmitter sites. They chew the generator wires and belts so badly, when the power goes out and the generator won't run (or run for long), then the station will be off the air. Ended up finding an all-natural solution and haven't had a problem at my sites since. See photos.

Built nests for the rattlers in the generators and under the air conditioning units. Just post labels for service personnel warning of the "inhabitants" and you never have to worry about mice or rats knocking the station off the air again.

They even have names now. The first one is Oscar. The second one is Butch watching me go in and out of the building. The third is Oscar's bride (no name for her yet) in her nest inside the generator. They're actually kinda friendly once they get used to you.

First of all try to locate the squirrels nuts. Then jump up and down on them. That squirrel will not return and neither will any of his friends that witnessed the event !

I have had the same problem. What worked for me is to take an old soup can and put some mothballs in it, pinch the open end so it holds them in and put the can under the hood somewhere. Usually there is room next to the battery. They haven't been back since.

Years ago I worked in a large transmitter site. Rats would get in the cable trenches and cause havoc with remotely controlled transmitters. One night they even got into the control room and ate my lunch. Got a metal plate, stripped the insulation off the ends of a A/C cord. crimped one end of the cord to the metal plate and the other I put a piece of cheese and dangled it above the metal plate, put everything into the cable trench, plugged the cord into a wall socket,replaced the trench cover and forgot about it. Few hours later the lights in the control room went out (tripped a breaker). Yep fried one of those babies. This procedure is not recommended for application in the home or garage.
