36 5 window trunk back

Is there anybody out there with an ORIGINAL 36 5 window trunk back that can tell me what the material was on the surface of the trunk floor. In pictures I have seen it appears that there was a tar paper type material on the floor of the trunk as well as the entire floor of the car.

There was a tar paper like material covering the floor and trunk of your car. In addition, the trunk sides were lined with a sound deadener.

You can hopefully see from these photos the tar paper that was covering the floor and trunk. This is a 40,000 mile '36 5W that was stored since inside since 1951.

your picture #2, whats the tube coming out of sheet metal box for? is that drainage for the roll down rear window?

Thanks Don, the photos very helpful. Can you shed some light on trunk sticker and associated screws? is the striker painted and if so what color. I have information that the screws holding the striker are oval S2, can you confirm that.

Wow great shots ,I have never seen the back board between the drain pipes I just looked at mine and the screw holes are there ,did 34s have this imprinted sound deadening to ?Ted

drain pipes? as in two? don rogers posted some great original un-touched photos that for sure. I wonder if he'll post measurements of the board / slots. . . .

On very Tangled shots #1 photo it shows a board at the very rear ,I cannot see how it fits around the pipes ,On Canadian cars you couldn't have the forward board because of the lack of a second strut to screw it to or is this a std verses deluxe thing ,Ted

Slippa....The trunk striker was plain malleable iron. It was attached with (2) oval head 1/4-28x1/2" oval head machine screws (Raven Finish)

Ford Nut......I do not have dimensions or measurements for divider board. The coupe in the photos was not mine.

The board shown in the photos does not fit 'around' the trunk drain hoses, it fits forward of that point. Originally there were two wooden blocks that were screwed to the rear floor from the bottom. The board then screwed into these wooden blocks. The board essentially came straight down from the trunk lip to the floor. Hope this helps explain and I can try to get some photos this weekend.

The 35-36 Ford Coupes used the board that is attached to the two vertical channels that support the rear deck. The board goes behind the channel to the rear and not in front as shown on one submittal.


There is a carriage bolt on each side buried into the wood with a large flat washer and lock washer that allows the washer to ride on the edge of the channels. The flat washer has a small 90 degree bend to compensate for the thickness of the edge of the channel and provides a "friction fit" not a tightly bolted connection.


The handles are there to allow you to raise up the board to allow access to the area ahead of the trunk and behind the seat.


I will try to get dimensions of the board and handle holes later.

Follow-up on the 35-36 trunk board.


Board appears to be pine and a true 3/4" thickness.


Length is 43-1/2" by 7" wide.


Bottom on each end is a notch 1/2" high by 2-7/8" long.


Hand holes are each 5" overall length by 1" high with 1" diameter ends cutout.


End of hand hole is 7" from each end.


Bolt hole on each end is 3/8" diameter and located 2-5/8" from the top and 1-3/4" from the end.


Carriage bolts are 3/8" diameter by 1-1/4" long.


Need 1-1/4" flat washer, lock washer and nut.
