I was always told that the modern lining was harder than the original woven lining, so it required more braking pressure to get the same friction to stop the car. You can get more pressure with hydraulics, so that works out. But with mechanical brakes it is not so easy to get that much braking force on the shoes.

The modern linings would probably last longer (more miles) but we don't tend to put that many miles on the old cars, so it's not a big deal. Better to have the softy, somewhat stickier, linings that don't require you to really push so hard on the pedal...

I have a 1930 Model A running gear purchased from a hot rod project. It has riveted molded linings and steel stamped drums. Both are nice and smooth, and I'll leave them. Somewhere in the Service Bulletins it tells about the new heavy duty molded linings now available. If I'm not mistaken it even called them heavy duty for extreme duty such as taxi's.

modern linings dont stop as well as the original woven ones. I have a set on my A and it takes alot more effort to get the same results.

I prefer the woven linings. The first thing I do when I buy a car is check the linings, and if they're bonded I change 'em out. Like Jim said, a softer, easier pedal.

The latest issue of the Model A News(Nov-Dec) has a question/answer in the Technical Questions and Answers about this. The technical chairman talks about composite bonded lining being better with cast iron drums. Where can these linings be found?
