tappets....
Anyone ever see a tappet like the LARGER one shown in these pics below ?
It's HUGE and I'm not sure why ? The large foot is great/safe for any cam use , however the bore size would have to be enlarged from stock and made pretty big. Can a tappet bore be made tooo big , as to weaken such ? Who makes such a huge 'big footed' tappet, if you know ? BTW ...the lifter on the left is a full inch across...for perspective. Re: tappets....
Dodge had two versions, .625 and .633 dia
I have found that some will hit the sides of the cam bearings and need to have OD reduced. J

with the cam in it. The first photo is a box of new lifters that I bought at the Turlock swap last year for $2.00 each,..that was a good deal. The FOOT diameters are VERY close to 1.295".. The 2nd photo is some of the used lifters, with different FOOT diameters that range from 1.164" too 1.188". I never noted that till I measured them just now..there just spares.. |

Re: tappets....
I must have tried OVER a dozen times to get them to load...this is upsetting!
I was also going to say the negative side of theses lifters,...there too damn HEAVY,.. you need to run more spring pressure for them to follow the cam. I always thought about Aluminum lifters (hard Chromed) with an Iron foot or better yet a roller! BUT were dealing with 80 year old technology.. |

If I get time, and can locate Chrysler lifter, I'll show them side/side pictured. Hm, maybe futile effort, as can't seem to show pictures here anyway. Can't show eeemoggeees either now. What the heck happened ? Did Ryan change things up lately ...'twisted smiley face'..ha ? |

Re: tappets....
I seem to recall there was a Willys overland lifter available.
It is thought to be a chilled iron tappet/lifter which would be much better running on a steel cam. I have used the Chrysler lifter on a steel cam before and tried Tin coating and Dicronite. Nothing has been foolproof. FWIW, a solid A-2 lifter might work well, I just need to make about 140 for the first batch, taking a list for those interested. J

Re: tappets....
Little has been said about worn lifter bores and reconditioning them.
Most people when rebuilding an engine just buy new lifters and stick them in. Few even hone the lifter bores to clean the scale off. I have yet to see an original A/B block that the lifter bores weren't worn out. I have had good success using the Chrysler 6 lifters by machining the OD of the face and shortening them to fit the B block. The lifter bores are reamed oversize. The website is still fucked up so pictures are not an option. |
