My ratchet nut must be worn. The edges on it are not as sharp as a new one (I have a new one in my parts box). The crank slips out easily if I'm hand cranking it.

There's not much room in front of the engine - is it possible to change the ratchet nut without removing the radiator?

I can't find my copy of Les Andrews' book, so I can't look it up.

Yes, it's easy. I made a special box wrench by heating a combination wrench and putting a couple bends in it. If you can slip a socket over the nut and a breaker bar, just lay it on the driver's side of the frame and hit the starter for a split second with the key OFF. This will break it loose. I do the same thing with my box wrench. Slick and easy.

If thepin in the hand crank has flat spots worn on it,it may even slip on a good crank nut.Crank nut also needs to line up with hole in crank brg.

Thanks. Looks like I"ll have to hit the flea market for a 1-3/8" wrench.

I found an 1-3/8" short socket, 1/2" drive that I use (on eBay). It just fits, then run a 1/2" extention thru the crank hole & use your favorite breaker bar or ratchet wrench.

I found that a vw axle nut socket will also work I think 32mm. Its wrong but it works. I use a long extension and a electric impact to take mine off.
