Default Cowl Light mounting bracket

Good Morning!!
Our 1930 Coupe appears to have the interior cowl light mounting bracket installed, no blocks between the bracket and skin though. I would think they are original as "extra" parts on a car would not have been deemed as "profitable" to Henry.

Is there a way to determine if they are original?

The lights are long gone as are the mounting holes (no filler so maybe a welded patch) with no evidence of repair.

And last question: with the gas tank installed how would one get the positioning correct to add the lights?

I looked inside and see no way to drill even a pilot hole from the inside and I think it would be rather difficult to get a hole centered on the bracket from the exterior...

THANKS and LOVE this group!!!

The cowl reinforcement bar was in all A's, the hole was added at some point to better accommodate installation of the cowl light as an option. There are/were templates available to correctly position the exterior drillings.

cant address the originality, but I added lights to my 30 cowl two months ago.
Lots of measurements, 'cause, there was no room for error. After all the measuring I made my own template out of poster board. Pattern transferred to cowl. drilled a small, 1/8", pilot hole, checked against the template, then drilled a larger hole. The final diameter was drilled with a step drill.

VERY NICE!!!

The issue I have is the interior brackets (with mounting hole) are already installed so measuring to get the correct alignment is not really an option but I could always rework the bracket to match the exterior mounting position.

What lights did you install?

That's good to know and I will be doing a little "exploratory" dismantling this weekend to see exactly what I'm dealing with.

Snyder's has this handy tool for marking where to drill for cowl lights. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...earchByKeyword May save you some heartburn.

I believe they have the wood blocks also.

Whatever you do, don't get them from Vintique. They look nice but the arms are all wrong and don't point the light in the correct direction.

I got a pair of good used arms from Steve at Bert's and had them rechromed.

These from Antique went back...

Holes don't even line up.

bought a pair of used arms and shells - still with good chrome - from a buddy. The insides, reflector and bulb and wires to convert to cowl lights and blinkers came from Berts.

Yeppers I have seen this but it looks like the tool inserts from the inside so not sure there is enough clearance to get it inserted into the bracket hole.

Is there is anyone that can verify it will fit with the gas tank installed?
