Len, there is no serial number on a Ford Flathead engine. There is, however, on the bell housing of the transmission, which was also stamped on the car frame, visible on the driver side under the hood, and two other p[laces hidden under the body. Note that it is the serial number on the frame that is on your title, as the transmission may not be original to the car.

There is no way to know if the engine is original. If the car had a 21 and/or 24 stud engine and still does, there is a slight possibility that the engine is original, however, contrary to common beliefs, the pre 1950 engines did not generally last beyond 50k.
If you look at newspaper and magazine ads of the 40's/50's you will note numerous ads for rebuilt/overhauled engines, the majority of which will be in the $89. range. All of the major large retailers of the post WWII era, Sears, Montgomery Wards, etc., carried an extensive line of in-exspensive rebuilt engines.

JUst to be CLEAR.........Model A blocks DID have a serial number stamped on the block. The V8s, including your 1940 version, DID NOT have a number stamped on the blocks. The number did however (as stated above) appear as a stamping on the transmission which was bolted to the V8 engines. DD
