T5 transmission speedometer question
Does the drive gear inside the transmission on the shaft supposed to slide or is it supposed to be locked in place at all times? Mine slides after removing the speedometer driven gear that the speedometer cable goes into. I'm thinking the clip is broke that holds the drive gear inside the transmission but just want to be sure before I remove the tail housing to check.
Does anybody know? |

Should be held on with a clip.

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
So more than likely the ear on the clip has broken? The gear slides forward when touching it thru the speedometer hole in the case but doesn't slide back.
When pushing in the speedometer driven gear it just turns free by hand so it's not meshing up. Can this clip be installed with the transmission in the car by just pulling the tail housing? |

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
Yes, if you can get the tail housing off and get good access to the shaft. Might be easier to just pull it, remember you have to take the gearshift connection to the shifting rods apart.

Second pic shows the small hole (on the shiney, raised surface) that the tang in the clip locks into. DD |

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
Thanks for all the info. The thing I can't find out for sure is if the retainer clip for one T5 fits all T5's. The T5 I have is from an 87 S10. Will the clip for the mustang T5's fit?

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
As much as I've played with the GM T5s, I've never put my hands on a Ford variant, but I'm fairly sure that the gears are similarly-dimensioned EXCEPT for the fact that the GMs (Chevys) have 27-splines, where-as the Fords have 28-splines. I'd suspect the clips are identical. DD

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
I did some checking on ebay for one but only came up with some for other types of transmissions. In this one listing though the seller listed some alternate part numbers. Cross referencing those numbers on google lead me to one site that matched the number. It listed the part number as borg warner t5 world class and non world class with both using the same clip.
Links below but if this is correct the same clip is used for the TH350 and 700R4 transmission to. Just thought I'd share the info. If it's wrong please correct. I sent the seller a question asking if it was for the T5 also, if I hear back I'll post the info. The part number is: 1390-056-002 http://www.ebay.com/itm/TH350-700R4-...dVVLGB&vxp=mtr http://www.dtcomponents.com/files/DT2008.pdf |

Re: T5 transmission speedometer question
Just a update. The seller confirmed the clip also fitted the T5. I got it installed yesterday and it worked. Also just a fyi. If running a 700 rear tire with a 9 tooth drive gear and 3.50 gears in the rear the perfect combo for getting the speedometer accurate is a 21 tooth driven gear.
