Do a search, Google is your friend.

The Ford Barn > General Discussion > Early V8 (1932-53)
Reload this Page '40 ford cpe gas tank capacity .

My owner's manual says 14 gallons. FYI: 1932 was 10 gal. and 1941-48 was 17 gal.

Anybody have a diagram where the baffles are located in a 40 tank ? I have opened and repaired a 34 and 35's and put them back together with success and need to try it on a tank I just got which seems to be quite heavy with sludge, my mistake for not checking it better before purchase. Live and learn I guess ?

I use Drano crystals mixed in a small container to pour in the tank and just affect the bottom. You can generally pour the crap out the next day. Just don't get it on you. The lye will burn you.

This will require a lot more than a few crystals of Drano roto, thinking a small jack hammer by the feeling ! Might give it a try just to see, thanks

I've had chunks come out that were at least 1/2 inch thick of old dried resin from rotten fuel in the bottom of old fuel tanks. Sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, and sodium nitrate with aluminum chips will cut almost anything loose that isn't nailed down.

engineman, I was not really looking for a tank, I just acquired one with a couple of rims ,a rear end etc. As long as I have it I thought I might open it and see whats going on inside. I would say by the weight, it has some serious gunk stuck there.

rotorwrench, I need to be on a low salt diet, ya know, blood pressure and so forth. That sure would be a lot of sodium ! Thanks for the suggestion just the same.
